an approaches engineering education through the creation of interactive art installations that convey scientific concepts. By engaging in the artistic process, students tap into the thrill of exploring the unknown which is a feeling that drives professional scientists and engineers but is often hard to cultivate in a high school setting.

A collaboration with the Philip Beesley Studio and the Living Architecture Systems Group (LASG) transformed Ian’s occasional tech-art experiments into a structured, multi-year initiative. The centrepiece of this initiative is LEO (Light Embodied Odyssey) which is a large-scale, laser-cut acrylic and 3D-printed LED sculpture that narrates layers of the natural world, from String Theory and biomolecules to dopamine addiction, gravitational fields, and supernovas. Framing the project as art liberates students from the pressure of finding the “right” answer and invites them to dwell in the realm of curiosity and discovery.
